Shooting Location: Astoria, Oregon, USA.

This House of the Greenwood's who Jesse lives in, is located at 34th - 3392 Harrison Street in Astoria.

These contemporary photographs of the location were shot by me in August 2004.

The picket fence was not in the movie and less trees.

Many scenes were filmed in the interior of the house. The house was used for "Free Willy" and
"Free Willy 2 - The Adventure Home".

Jesse's bedroom, beautiful view to the Astoria Bridge. You see it in the first and the second movie.

Filmed at 34th Street.

These contemporary photographs of the location were shot by me in August 2005.

Filmed at intersection 34th street and Harrison.

14th Street Dock in Astoria, where the scene at the fishmarket in "Free Willy" was filmed.

Final scenes of the "Free Willy" movie were filmed at the "Hammond Mooring Basin".

Probably the most dramatic scenes in Free Willy were filmed in Astoria and the dramatic climax was filmed here in the mooring basin.

Directions: To reach the Hammond Mooring Basin take Hwy. 30 West and go over the Young's Bay Bridge. Turn R at the first light onto Harbor Dr. This will take you to a four-waystop in the center of Warrenton. Continue straight ahead on Fort Stevens Highway about 2 1/2 miles to the center of Hammond. Turn R on Iredale St. (across from theHammond Post Office) and this will take you into the Hammond Mooring Basin.

This is the scene in which Jesse's plan to free Willy is brought to fruition. To accomplish this series of shots, three different animatronic whales were used.

A full-sized version swimming in the water; a half-section of the whale when they are towing it to the jetty (to reduce the weight when the truck is in trouble;) and a three-quarter version used to make certain shots easier to manage.

The waters of the Columbia River were so cold in the evening, that a hot tub was installed at the Mooring Basin's office to allow the actors to warm-up between takes to prevent hypothermia.

The crew were able to protect themselves more effectively from cold as they did not have to appear in front of the lens in what appears to be light clothing.

Although all of the cast had "doubles" for this sequence, none were used, not even Jesse's. Jason Richter, a native of Medford, Oregon, was one of the most enthusiastic participants.

Keiko, the killer whale used in the film, died on Friday 12 December 2003 after the sudden onset of pneumonia in the Taknes fjord in Norway. The whale was 27 years old.

Plot Outline:

When a boy learns that a beloved killer whale is to be killed by the aquarium owners, the boy risks everything to free the whale.

When Jesse is running down the jetty to urge Willy to keep swimming and avoid the nets of the "bad guys," it appears as if he is actually running on the rocks. As any selfrespecting Astoria fisherman can tell you, that's just plain impossible.

So, in the tradition of old Hollywood, ("Doing the impossible is simple; making it look easy is Art,") the crew made a wooden pathway just behind the foremost rocks so that Jesse was running down a fairly smooth path and pretty much out of harm's way.

These contemporary photographs of the location were shot by me in August 2005.

Note: "Free Willy 3 - The Rescue" was filmed in:

Howe Sound, Squamish, British Columbia, Canada.

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

" Let me get this straight, you snuck out of the house in the middle of the night to clean up graffiti? That's an amazing story. "
